Preimplantation Genetic Testing Helping at-risk Couples Minimize Risk of Chromosomal Abnormalities Like Down Syndrome

Down syndrome is a genetic condition that occurs during conception due to an extra chromosome. People with Down syndrome have 47 chromosomes in their cells instead of 46. The condition presents growth challenges such as developmental delays, learning disabilities, cognitive impairment, general health issues such as heart problems or immune disorders.

Down syndrome is known to be a serendipitous event in pregnancy with little predisposing factors – apart from maternal age. Pre-screening during IVF can test the embryos for factors such as Down syndrome before the embryo transfer.
