The theme of this year’s portfolio was Future of Fashion. The design collections on the ramp introduced thematic inspiration of individual interpretations and concepts. Every collection had a unique idea and well crafted thought behind it. This year, the budding designers explored their creative ideas through design concepts based on fashion sustainability, traditional Indian craft, fashion sub-culture, individual design identity in sync with the dynamic and ever evolving fashion trends. Final year students of Fashion styling & Image Design conceptualized and created the costumes for “The Black Swan”. The performance fuses classic ballet with street play and was themed around body positivity and gender. The concept ‘Fashion as a voice for Social Activism’ was scripted and directed by 2 students of Fashion Media Communication. Colors, fabrics and forms were picked up by the students, with a lot of detail to beautifully marry the subtle dance form with strong contemporary breakout sequence.

Deforestation

To increase the demand of the fabrics which does not come from trees, Rajul Goldar is promoting the usage of non-cellulosic fabrics among the consumers. The project is all about what is on the inside, and not what is visible. Rajul wants to remind people of the beauty of forest hence designed his collection in such a way that movement in the garment makes the vision of forest come alive. Rajul is the winner of Max Design Awards 2017-18 for best ramp appeal.

Afterlife

The process of designing without waste or with pre-loved things is what caught the eye of Pallavi Yadav. Afterlife is the journey of uniforms worn by people with a story. It’s a collection with a story where the garment is deconstructed, adorned with zero water embellishments. Pallavi has been chosen to represent India on a week-long Sustainable Fashion Summit in Copenhagen, Denmark by the United Nations.

Kanchani: Gulzaar-E-Hind

Damanjeet Singh’s work is inspired from Tawaif – courtesan of the Mughal era. The traits of tawaif are reflected in the garments - bold, free and independent who never believe in the norms set by the Indian society. The collections are inclusive of the quality in terms of fabric and surface ornamentation. It emits the feel of luxury through its voluminous silhouettes, intricacy and fine craftsmanship.

The event saw big names from the design and fashion industry, media, feature writers, educational institutes turn up to get a sneak peek into the Pearl Academy Portfolio 2018.
