The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) held a Special Convocation for its first batch of 12 graduating students of the L.L.M. in Access to Success programme. In this Special Convocation, Diploma students in Counselling (19); Gerontology (4); Youth Development and Social Change (2); Water Sanitation and Hygiene (16); Community Media (10); Digital Library and Information Management (23) received their certificates.

In his opening address at the Special Convocation, Prof. S. Parasuraman, Director (TISS) said:

In a bid to enable social development through academic excellence, the Institute has diversified its activities beyond its initial mandate of social work education. This has led to the genesis of several innovative and path-breaking courses in the Institute. The Special Convocation today celebrates the graduation of students from these path-breaking, first-of-its-kind academic programmes.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the Chief Guest at the Special Convocation, awarded the L.L.M. degrees and distributed the academic awards and prizes for the Degree and Diploma programmes.

The Dalai Lama’s Convocation Address was very eloquent and thought-provoking. While extending his hearty congratulations to the graduating students, he shared with the audience that he was quite a lazy student himself .He reminisced about his exam days and the anxiety he had gone through at that time, but how eventually everything made sense in the end. HH Dalai Lama expressed high regard for India and stressed that its stability was possible due to wisdom nurtured over centuries.

While stressing that blind faith is uncalled for, he said:

I pray every day. Everybody engages in prayer. However, it is not through prayer that things can be put right. Action, Karma...these are what would change the world. Intelligence and education are very important for this action to happen.
