Indian Institutions and Ontario Delegates Sign 16 New Agreements

Kathleen Wynne, Premier of Ontario, Canada, visited Mumbai today, where 16 new agreements between businesses and institutions from India and Ontario were announced. As a part of her visit to Mumbai, the Premier met with the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, the Honourable Devendra Fadnavis. The two leaders signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will focus on strengthening connections between Maharashtra and Ontario in key commercial areas, including urban infrastructure, information and communications technology, advanced manufacturing, agriculture and education.

 

“Businesses around the world are taking notice of Ontario’s competitive advantages, including India. This mission helped leaders, innovators and experts from Ontario and India partner on shared goals and priorities. In order to keep our economy strong and prosperous, we need to continue looking for opportunities to expand our trade with new and emerging markets,” said Premier Wynne soon after the MOU was signed.

 

The Premier also spoke at a plenary session in Mumbai, which was attended by Ontario delegates and representatives from Indian companies, where several new higher education agreements were signed. The value of these agreements is over $240 million.

Delegates also signed agreements that will help India and Ontario share their expertise and knowledge:

 

- With the goal of providing customers with safe and healthy drinking water through cutting edge technologies and customized water solutions, Eureka Forbes, India’s leading health and hygiene company, today, signed a $10 million (MOU) towards forming a strategic partnership with Process Research ORTECH (PRO) – an Ontario company that incubates and commercializes innovative technologies for process industries. Through this collaboration, the companies will leverage their core competencies and skills to introduce a unique and innovative technology with Automated Variable Filtration (AVF), a high quality water filtration system, to India.
 

- College of Engineering Pune and Toronto, Ontario-based Seneca College announced that they will launch an innovative project competition in the area of health care through Seneca's incubator HELIX (Health Entrepreneurship and Lifestyle Innovation Exchange). This tri-party MOU, also with the City of Markham, will promote global entrepreneurship among young entrepreneurs from India and Ontario.

 

- Essel Group and Ottawa, Ontario-based Clearford Water Systems announced that they will work together to bring an all-in-one wastewater collection and treatment system to India. This includes identifying a village for a demonstration site.
 

- eCamion Inc. with Ryerson University Centre for Urban Energy and Larsen and Turbo / Tamil Nadu State Grid / Anna University – Centre for Urban Energy will launch India's first community energy storage system at Anna University in the Tamil Nadu state grid.  These Indian partners selected an Ontario start up to co-develop this system. This is a perfect scenario of a made-in-Ontario and make-in-India solution.

 

- Indian Institute of Technology – Bombay and Hamilton, Ontario-based McMaster University announced that they will work together on new collaborative research initiatives and training models. Key areas are automotive research, materials and biotechnology.
 

“The tremendous success of the mission builds on the longstanding relationship between India and Ontario and also demonstrates the skills of the province’s companies and organizations in building effective international collaborations. I look forward to the contracts and joint ventures signed during the mission deepening our partnerships in the years ahead,” said Brad Duguid, Minister of Economic Development, Employment and Infrastructure.

Quick Facts

In total, 16 agreements were signed today between Ontario delegates and Indian business, sustainable development and infrastructure, and higher education experts. This is in addition to the 49 agreements that were signed during the Premier’s visits to New Delhi, Chandigarh and Hyderabad. Agreements signed on the mission are valued at over $240 million.

 

Premier Wynne signed MOUs with five Indian states during the mission to open the doors for the regions to work together in areas of mutual interest.

 

Ontario has International Trade and Investment Offices in Mumbai and New Delhi that can help Indian companies do business in Ontario and provide information to Ontario businesses about opportunities in India.
