Thapar University Hosts International Conference on Mathematical Applications in Engineering

More than 150 delegates from all over India and abroad participating.

 

Activities at the conference interactive in nature, involving sessions like plenary lectures, invited talks and presentation of papers covering a wide range of topics on special functions in both pure and applied mathematics.

 

The conference will immensely benefit not only participants, but also researchers, faculty members and students.

 

With an aim of providing a common platform for the exchange of ideas and latest developments in the field of mathematical applications in engineering disciplines, Thapar University, Patiala is hosting the 13th annual International Conference on Special Functions and their Applications (ICSFA), in which more than 150 delegates from all over India and abroad are participating.

 

The three-day conference and symposium on applications of mathematics to engineering sciences, which began hereon Thursday, is being organised by Thapar University’s School of Mathematics and Computer Applications in association with the Society for Special Functions and their Applications (SSFA).

 

While Prof AM Mathai, Director, Centre for Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, Peechi Campus, Kerala, and Emeritus Professor, Mathematics and Statistics, McGill University, Canada, is the guest of honour at the conference, other prominent delegates taking part include Prof AK Agarwal of the Centre for Advanced Study in Mathematics, Panjab University, Chandigarh, and Emeritus Scientist, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Prof MA Pathan, former Chairman, Department of Mathematics, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, and Prof VP Saxena, former Vice-Chancellor, Jiwaji University, Gwalior.

 

“It is a matter of great pride for us to host such a prestigious conference. It reflects the expertise of Thapar University’s School of Mathematics and Computer Applications in developing mathematical tools that are suited to the needs of science and engineering-based industries. The School, which has 40 highly qualified faculty members from the research background, has handled sponsored research projects worth Rs 1.51 crore. The research being conducted by the School has won recognition in the form of 325 publications in referred journals over the past five years. I am sure that this conference will immensely benefit not only the participants, but also researchers, faculty members and students of Thapar University,” said Thapar University Director Prof Prakash Gopalan.

 

The activities at the conference are interactive in nature, involving sessions like plenary lectures, invited talks and presentation of papers covering a wide range of mathematical tools like orthogonal polynomials, fractional calculus, combinatorics and q-theory.

 

Towards the end of the conference, the AK Agarwal Prize for Best Publication of the Year will be awarded to a mathematician below 45 years of age, who is working at an Indian university/institute, for a paper published or accepted in the previous year of the conference in areas influenced by the mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan. The Aruna Gupta Prize and MI Qureshi Prize for Best Paper Presentation will be given to an Indian mathematician below 35 years of age.

Thapar University is ranked amongst the best worldwide. It is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council of the UGC as “A” grade among all Indian universities. It emerged as the only institution north of Delhi to figure in the list of top 20 technical universities released by The Week for 2014 by bagging the 16th position. While Thapar University secured the 22nd rank in the India Today survey, it was rated as 3rd in the category of Top Engineering Colleges of Super Excellence in the Global Human Resource Development Centre-Competition Success Review Engineering College Survey for 2014.
